When hashtags first hit Instagram years ago, they were the hottest trick in social media. But things have changed. Today, hashtags still matter — but how you use them (and where) makes all the difference.










Where You Can Use Hashtags

  • Instagram → Still the most hashtag-friendly platform. Use 10–20 hashtags mixing local, industry, and branded ones.

  • Facebook → Use sparingly (1–3 hashtags). They help a little with discovery, but too many look spammy.

  • LinkedIn → Hashtags are useful here, especially for industry-specific topics. Stick to 3–5 per post.

  • TikTok → Very hashtag-heavy. Use trending hashtags + local/business tags (5–10 is plenty).

  • X (Twitter) → Hashtags are part of the culture. Use 1–3 per post max.


What Hashtags Actually Do

  • On social platforms, hashtags help people discover your content by category (like #GreenvilleTX or #RoofingTips).

  • On Google SEO, hashtags don’t directly boost rankings. Google sees them the same as regular text.

  • The real benefit is indirect SEO: more visibility → more engagement → more clicks → stronger signals that can help your content rank.

  • Keep hashtags relevant to your post and audience.
